History
See linked literature below for information on safety and biocompatibility
It is estimated at least 140,000 women in 34 countries have undergone quinacrine pellet insertion - which causes scarring of the fallopian tubes - as a method of non-surgical contraception since 1977. However, quinacrine as a method of non-surgical sterilization has not been approved by any regulatory body. A primary funder concluded method was not a viable permanent contraceptive product after analyzing findings from non-human safety studies, and both the FDA and WHO have halted evaluation in humans. Advocates for the method continue to push for reevaluation of animal studies data and a reopening of development.
