History

1970s: Iron was explored for use in contraceptives but research has not picked back up. It was highlighted as an option in a Nature review in 2024. Iron IUD development is active at the University of Western Ontario as of 2024. 
2022: A zinc IUD device model was tested in rats, with positive efficacy results.
