History

In 2018, USC tested the viability of using DMPA as an emergency contraceptive when injected intramuscularly. In the small study (n=29), DMPA suppressed ovulation in 65% of participants, with no cases of follicle rupture when DMPA was administered through cycle day 12. While not as effective as currently approved EC methods, researchers concluded that DMPA may be able to act as an alternative form of emergency contraception that could "self-bridge" to ongoing contraceptive use. Results from this evaluation were published in 2020.
