History

1987: Airlangga University begins bench research on the potential contraceptive use of ethanol extract of gendarussa leaves. Gendarussa (also spelled gandarusa) has traditionally been used by the Nimboran ethnic group (Papua, Indonesia) as a male contraceptive method.
While study results are not available online, Airlangga claims that development has advanced to Phase II clinical research, and indicate to media sources that the university will pursue Phase III trials. The university conducted ethnomedical studies with members of the Nimboran ethnic group in 2022, with qualitative results published in 2023.
