History

Wearable heated underwear was first marketed as a contraceptive device in the 1970s but has not gone through rigorous clinical research. Some smaller studies show potential for this method, but its safety, reversibility, and efficacy have not yet been defined. Despite this lack of clinical data, several start-ups have begun to market thermal underwear products.
In 2023, Jemaya Innovations - manufacturers of SpermaPause underwear - acknowledged that as their product is not recognized as a medical device, they're unable to provide medical information about their device available publicly.

Note: This record is similar to, but distinct from, the record on artificial cryptorchidism (or lifting the testes into the body cavity using a device or function-designed underwear). While both methods intend to achieve reversible male infertility by raising the temperature of the testes, this record documents efforts to do so through applying direct heat, typically with electronic heating packs, to the testes outside of the body.
