Contraceptive Research Opportunity for Small Businesses


The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is accepting Small Business Innovation Research applications to support and facilitate the development of new and/or improved contraceptive products for men and women.


Contraception product development programs of high priority are:

  • Pre-coital contraception

  • Male and female contraceptives based on nonsteroidal action

  • New and improved delivery devices for contraception

  • Multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) products with adequate contraceptive and anti-infective properties. Proposed MPT products must have a validated contraceptive mechanism of action but may investigate potential anti-infective properties with appropriate rationale and/or supporting data.


NICHD intends to commit $1.5 million in FY 2018 to fund up to six R43/R44 awards. The budget cap for Phase I research proposals is $225,000 in total costs for a one-year scope of work. Phase II research proposals have a budget cap of $1.5 million in total annual costs for two-year scopes of work. Phase II proposals must include in vivo product testing.


Letters of intent are due by March 16 and applications must be submitted by April 16. Earliest start date is for awarded grants is December 2018.
