$250 Million Pledged to Accelerate Breakthroughs in Women’s Health
Melinda French Gates and Wellcome Leap have announced a landmark commitment to revolutionize women’s health research and development, bringing their total investment to $250 million. The initiative aims to close critical gaps in medical research and treatment that have long neglected women’s unique health needs.
Globally, women spend 25% more of their lives in poor health than men, largely due to systemic underfunding and under-research of conditions that disproportionately affect them. From cardiovascular disease and autoimmune disorders to stillbirths and Alzheimer’s, women face health challenges that are often misdiagnosed or overlooked.
Wellcome Leap, led by CEO Regina E. Dugan—former head of DARPA—is applying a high-speed innovation model to health R&D, similar to the one that helped accelerate mRNA vaccine development.
This new funding, in partnership with Pivotal, aims to expand research into deeply neglected areas of women’s health and deliver life-saving solutions faster. Dugan emphasizes that breakthroughs in women’s health are not a matter of chance, but of choice—and calls on leaders across sectors to join the effort.
