Germany Invests €12 Million in Non‑Hormonal Contraception R&D
Germany’s Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space is investing €12 million (2026–2029) in four interdisciplinary consortia, with a strong emphasis on non‑hormonal approaches and male contraception. Projects include target discovery and validation platforms, sperm‑specific ion channel inhibitor development, and mechanisms to reversibly disrupt sperm transport. A fourth consortium will assess the effectiveness of digital cycle‑tracking tools and explore biomarker‑based fertility detection.
In a quote from FemTech Insider, Federal Minister Dorothee Bär explains the new investment: “Strengthening women’s health is a priority of my ministry’s research funding – it’s a matter close to my heart. Many women today are critical of the pill because they want to avoid health impacts. And many men would like to take on more responsibility. We need new, modern contraceptives that are safe, have few side effects, and take all genders into account.”
