In “Contraceptive device Alyra developed in Adelaide could revolutionise the treatment for period pain,” Jasmin Teurlings writes for 7 News (Australia) about a new contraceptive device that also treats menstrual pain. The Alyra, an intrauterine device (IUD) developed by researchers in Adelaide, Australia, releases a small, targeted dose of pain medication directly into the uterus and has fewer side effects than a regular dose of pain medication. The device is currently being tested at the University of South Australia and researchers are looking for women who experience menstrual pain to join a second phase of clinical trials. The hope is to have it become available in the next five years.

Susan Evans, Gynecologist and founder of Alyra Biotech, stated, “Women’s health has been under researched, under recognised, under managed and there is so many opportunities for innovation in this space…This device could really change the game for women and their wellbeing.”
